Darious Abasa (age 10) is one of the app2vox trial candidates at the Komo Centre (Entebbe, Uganda). He was diagnosed with Autism when he was 3 and a half years old. When he joined the centre, he was non-verbal and conveyed his thoughts, feelings or ideas through physical gestures, posture, and facial expressions. This form of communicating made it complicated for Darious to express himself. Sometimes when body language and eye contact failed he would use a high pitched noise and this in turn can cause discomfort for him. Darious can so far acknowledge the meaning of the YES and NO icons; when asked a question Darious associates the yes and no icons with being a positive and negative response. App2vox Support Coordinator, John Ferguson states, ‘Darious shows a lot of interest in learning the app2vox application, which will eventually help him say what’s on his mind’.
